Benjamin felt like he hadn’t stopped running. He was conscious of being caught on CCTV and just wanted to get himself out of sight as quickly as possible. He had no money, no phone, just the suit he was wearing. Keeping away from the main roads, he finally found a construction site in a backstreet somewhere near Kennington. It appeared to be deserted and he slipped in, collapsing inside the framework of what appeared to be a new block of flats under construction.

The obvious person to call was Emma, but he didn’t have the means – and trying to steal a phone wasn’t worth the attention it might draw. He didn’t know where she lived now, not the exact address, anyway – she’d moved into a new place after he’d been arrested. And he didn’t know where she worked either, other than it was a Starbucks somewhere near the National Gallery.

He knew full well Ray Spinney had been behind the attack on the prison van. A man like that didn’t forget certain things, didn’t just disappear. The image of Terry Merchant flying backwards kept replaying in his mind, the spray of blood exploding from his chest as if on a loop. Small kindnesses, like the warm smile he’d given him in the cell that morning, the peppermint in the van, others over the months in Cromarsh – they all added up. He could only hope it hadn’t been as bad as it looked and the man was okay.

Outside he could hear the world getting on with its business and he tried to focus on what his next move should be. He didn’t have many friends he could turn to and it wouldn’t be fair on them anyway. Spinney would be frantically searching for him now and anyone who got in his way would . . . well, he’d already seen how far the man was prepared to go.

Sitting against a bare concrete wall, he pulled his knees up and hugged himself. He had one of the most dangerous men in the country desperate to find him and a government falling over itself to put him on a plane. The one person he really wanted to talk to was his mum. She’d know the right thing to do. But she wasn’t here, and as the wind blew through the empty husk of the building, he began to cry.
